BY KERI LYMAN keri@elmbankmedia.com editors' letters W BY HELAINE BLOCK helaine@elmbankmedia.com hen writer Lisa Valianti O'Brien told me she had some great news, I didn't know what to expect, but it really was exciting. She had snagged an interview with one of Hollywood's leading actors, who just happened to have come from Sudbury. What Lisa discovered when she interviewed Chris Evans, aka Captain America, was that he was truly a super guy — warm, funny, and modest. I think what struck me the most about her story was how Chris knew from a very young age that he wanted to be an actor and then took dramatic steps to get what he wanted. His life reads like an American success story. I hope you enjoy this Face to Face segment as much as I did. On another note, it was a lot of fun for me to write a story on the Concord and Acton music scene for this issue of North Bridge. The seed was planted more than a year ago when my sister visited me from Michigan. We went to the Colonial Inn for drinks on a Saturday night and couldn't get over how tal- ented the jazz singer was. Marveling that we had just heard music of that quality right here in Concord, we wandered over to the Main Streets Market & Café a few minutes away. When we got there, we were greeted by a rocking band and a crowded dance floor. I remember sitting down and thinking, "I can't believe all of this entertainment is only 10 minutes from my house." I hope people will read this story and realize that they don't have to go all the way into Boston for dinner and music. It's all right here in our charming communities. As always, we welcome any feedback on the magazine and love getting story ideas from our readers. You can reach me at keri@elmbankmedia.com. I am fortunate to be a part of Elm Bank Media and have been since 2008. Keri and I put a great deal of time and effort into the creation of a lifestyle publication that strives to offer a wide range of appeal and valuable information. In this issue, writer Janet Mendelsohn introduces us to a wealth of information in her Living Green piece, which is filled with fas- cinating facts and tips to keep readers abreast of how some local businesses are fulfilling their role to help save the environment. Every issue is unique and takes on its own personality, but this one is particularly special to me. This edition certainly contains an abundance of information and resources, but it is also one in which I share a piece of my personal life with you in the Good Works department. As a private person, to write a story about a close friend who lost her battle to breast cancer was a huge feat, but an important one that I felt strongly about sharing with you. The story I wrote, Making a Difference One Step at a Time, introduces you to my dear friend Meryl. Meryl was an incredibly kind and thoughtful human being and even while in a fierce fight for her life she so strongly wanted to find a cure for breast cancer to help save others. Shortly after she passed away, I went on a mission to carry on her wish by joining a 3-day, 60-mile breast cancer walk to raise funds to support research. Please take a few moments to read about how I found the perfect walk for me, where 100 percent of funds raised go directly to the cause that Meryl cared so deeply about. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I do and, as always, I encourage you to please contact me with any comments or story ideas at helaine@elmbankmedia.com. Count your blessings and best wishes for a happy and healthy spring and summer to follow. SPRING/SUMMER 2012 ★ north bridge magazine ★ 5 CAROLY N ROSS CAROLY N ROSS
