model existed. "I'll call him," the dealer
said. "I think he still has it." But before he
picked up the phone, Bill asked about the
price. When the dealer said "I think 100,"
as in 100 grand, Bill quickly said, "Don't
bother Claus."
Today, it would be impossible to piece
together a collection like that of the
Gladstones' from antique shows. "A lot of
this stuff was not meant to last," Wood
says. "The ticket booth sign was meant to
be a ticket booth sign. It wasn't meant to
be a work of art."
The Gladstones have lent items to vari-
ous exhibits and for reproduction in folk
art magazines and books, building a name
for themselves in their tiny corner of the
collection world.
